Where does our Default Subconscious Mindset come from?
The Bottom Line – Our default mindset rules our lives!
Our brain mostly runs on ‘default’ autopilot mode. Our best guess is that the brain handles around 11 million bits of data per second and that we are capable of consciously processing only around 50 of these. Our default thinking handles the rest (subconsciously and unconsciously). (https://beyond-default.com/confronting-default-thinking/ )
To introduce change in our life, we must raise our awareness of our default thinking and start to uncover our current thoughts and belief systems.
To help us do that, lets find out more about the key factors that shape our ‘default’ ways of thinking:
Our Ancient Reptile Brain: Our modern life can unnecessarily trigger our survival instincts that can cause us harm.
Indirect External Influences – Our Society and Culture: From early childhood, our culture and society norms shape us in many significant ways.
Direct External Influences – Our Family and Immediate Environment directly impacts us and our way of thinking continuously.
Our Habits – Our existing habits lead us to do what we have always done, good or bad.
So What? – Why does knowing about our Default Thinking matter?
Existing default thinking rules our lives. Our default thinking lays out the trajectory towards our default future. We become the result of our collective decisions and choices. Our unconscious default thinking makes choices for us based on default patterns and pathways in our brain, shaping our life one decision, one day at a time. Change requires awareness of current state. Innovation and change cannot come from our ancient survival responses, ingrained thinking and standard operating procedures we have collected over the years. It is paramount that we understand that. Putting no effort in mindset training we will get what we are already doing, BUT exciting alternate possibilities are completely available to us with on-purpose intentional thinking and consequent effort! Let’s go do that!
How?
Knowing where our default thinking comes from is the first step in taking control of our life and making changes:
Know Your Current State: Uncover and face our default ways, the path our life is currently on
Define the Target: Evaluate our default thinking to determine if it is acceptable for our desired life or is change required.
Set the Path to New Ways: We need to work to ‘tell’ our brain what we DO desire and what DOES NOT serve us well, so it can build the supportive neural pathways. Learn, Do, Reflect, Improve. Develop a cognitive skill to help break our default thinking patterns and change the trajectory of our life to a different – and more desired – future.
Reinforce – Rinse and Repeat: With consistency, we to solidify these intentional brain pathways.
