Water is a life-sustaining and life-saving force. Our bodies are made up of about 70% water. Water is vital in many ways. It helps regulate body temperature, it lubricates joints and helps prevent infection. Water keeps our organs functioning and delivers essential nutrients to all of the cells in the body. Water helps clear the body of unwanted waste.
Without adequate hydration our bodies are under duress. Water is the universal solvent. Nutrients in food are broken down and dissolved in water and transported through our bodies through our digestion process. Water carries essential oxygen to our cells. Every cell in the body requires water in order to work.
Good hydration does take planning. Understand your water needs and set a daily goal. Every person is unique in their own way, including their water needs. The amount is governed by several factors, including your weight, level of exercise, the climate where you live and dietary intake. For example, a good guideline is half your weight in ounces.(160 lbs divided by 2 = 80, therefore you need 80 oz. of water per day) The longer an exercise session is, more water is needed. The hotter or more humid the living environment is, more water is needed. Never ignore your thirst!
